Data Lead/Engineer


Full-time position. London-based, currently remote.

About the role

As we grow our product and customer base, we need to harness the data at our disposal to make decisions on where to go next or what to change. We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to take ownership of the development of a brand new data platform, someone who is not afraid of taking decisions and implementing them.

You will take responsibility for building a data platform from scratch and managing our data in a way it can be used to drive insights and value. This could include anything from building a data warehouse and implementing any necessary tooling, to creating dashboards and developing reports. Whatever it takes to facilitate everyone making data-driven decisions.

This role will have a strong influence on the company’s direction by providing insightful analysis of complex data. This will be a great opportunity both to learn in a cause driven fintech environment and make an impact on a small and rapidly growing start-up.

What you will be doing:

You’ll be expected to help set the data vision and get stuck in to make it a reality. But as a guide, the role will focus on the activities below: 

  • Build the infrastructure required for extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources including SQL/NoSql and AWS.
  • Choose the best technologies for setting up the data infrastructure from scratch.
  • Build / integrate with analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into customer acquisition, growth and other key performance metrics.
  • Understand business goals and needs, and translate them into insightful analysis.
  • Partner with tech, investment, marketing and product teams to understand business performance and work cross-functionally to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Undertake exploratory analysis and contribute fresh ideas to uncover opportunities.
  • Work closely with software engineers to implement best practices and a scalable data architecture.
  • Ensure our data complies with regulatory requirements, e.g. GDPR. 

Your skills & qualifications

  • 4+ years of demonstrable experience in data intensive roles, such as a data engineer or data analyst. Even better if it’s within financial services.
  • Hands on coding experience in technologies such as – SQL, Messaging systems, Unix shell scripting, Coding languages such as Java or others, AWS or similar.
  • Experience with Jenkins or other CI/CD tools, and working with microservices.
  • Strong root cause analysis – able to break apart problems, and design and implement effective solutions.
  • Experience working with multiple types of disparate data in a business environment.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience building dashboards and data visualisation for internal stakeholders – knowledge of Mixpanel or Amplitude is a bonus.
  • Skilled in the toolsets you’ll need to use or deploy – such as SQL, analytics and BI tools (we use Mixpanel and Google Analytics).
  • BA/BS in a quantitative field, such as statistics, mathematics, econometrics or physics, is highly desirable.
